Description: Sundar Popo was born on November 4, 1943. Sundar was the father of four children, two of whom have taken up singing. In 1976 Sundar won the first Local Song competition in the Indian Cultural Pageant. International success came to him when he performed at the Babla and Kanchan concert in Trinidad in 1979. Babla and Kanchan borrowed some of his hits, re-recorded them with better orchestration techniques and introduced them to India and the world. Sundar was a pioneer and introduced Indian musical tones and Indian instrumentation into Trinidadian music. He brought chutney into calypso. Sundar made many overseas concert tours to North America, Europe, India, Fiji, Mauritius, Guyana and Suriname, and recorded many songs. Sundar received a National Award for Excellence as top vocalist of the year in 1988. In 1993 he won the Sunshine Award for first place in Indian Soca, and in 1996 he received a "Caribbean Bacchanal" trophy. In 1993, he was awarded the Humming Bird Medal (Silver). He performed at the "World Beat Festival" in 1999. His last performance was at the 2000 Chutney Soca Monarch competition at Skinner Park.
